Put simply, a typical dye sublimation process uses dyes to print text or images onto a special transfer paper. Thereafter, the paper is pressed on a specific item (mug, t-shirt, etc.). Both the paper and the item are then placed into a heat press.

Keep in mind, the items used in this printing process must have a ‘sublimatable’ surface in order to produce vibrant, long-lasting, scratch-resistant transferred images. In addition, inkjet printers are commonly used for dye sublimation printing. The printer sprays the ink over the sublimation paper.

In order to produce high quality results, it is extremely important that you are using the right transfer pressure, time and temperature.

What Are The Items That Can And Cannot Be Printed?

First off, both hard and soft items can be used in sublimation printing. But, you need to check the surface of the item. Not all surfaces are suitable for this process.

In a nutshell, you can use hard items like signs, mugs, coated plaques, coasters, and more, while soft items include t-shirts, polyester fabric, cushions, pillowcases, etc.

On the other hand, you cannot use cotton garments because the image or text will peel off, fade or come off after a few washes.

At the same time, make sure you are using the right sublimation time, pressure and temperature for each items. Polyester fabrics, for example, should be heated at 400°F for 35 seconds.
